INCENSE

A Short Note About Incense

The burning of aromatic substances has probably been around for a long time, possibly since shortly after the discovery of fire. Frankincense had a brisk trade during the time of the Roman Empire and is mentioned as one of the gifts brought by the wise men for the infant Jesus. Ritual use of incense by the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Assyrians and Romans was very
common.

Other cultures have burned aromatic substances in a similar way including the practice of smudging by native North Americans. Popular plants for smudging include cedar, sage, sweetgrass and tobacco.

Modern religious practices by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches include the use of incense and symbolizes an expression or increase of devotion. Eastern religions have used incense for centuries for similar reasons.

At a purely practical and environmental level, the use of incense is an effective and less polluting alternative to aerosol "air fresheners".  After the incense is consumed a small amount of ash remains instead of a can and the propellants used for aerosols could be harmful. The longer lasting scents used for incense are also more effective in reducing pet odors than
the aerosols.

Incense is considered to be the precursor of modern aromatherapy.

From times unknown Agarbatti, also called incense sticks or prayer sticks, are known to elevate moods.  These sticks are reputed to aid meditation.

Historically, incense has been used for at least 5000 years - to accompany prayer, to worship the Gods, purify the air, release negative vibrations, induce self-awareness and to uplift the emotional state.

In Hindu tradition, incense plays a very important role as the aroma contributes to providing the most favorable atmosphere for meditation and prayer.

In ancient Sanskrit texts, there are many descriptions of incense being burned, to "fill the heart with euphoria and uplift the mind to its highest state".

Buddhists have always used incense to accompany their meditations, to induce self-awareness and free them of negative states.

The Ancient Egyptians used incense in many of their temple rituals. Each incense had a specific purpose and effect - for example, Frankincense was regarded as "sustenance for the gods".
