Amber is fossilized tree sap or resin, and has been appreciated for its color and beauty for centuries. Good quality amber is used in the manufacture of jewelry. Although not a mineral, it is sometimes classified as a gemstone. Most amber is in the range of 30–90 million years old. Amber can sometimes contain insects and even small vertebrates. Semi-fossilized resin is known as copal amber. Amber occurs in a range of different colors. As well as the usual yellow-orange that is associated with the color amber, amber itself can range from a whitish color through a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other colors can include red amber (also called cherry amber), green amber, and blue amber, which is rare. Much of the most valued amber is translucent, but cloudy amber and opaque amber is also very common. Opaque amber contains numerous minute bubbles. This kind of amber is known as butterscotch amber or "bastard amber", even though it is a true amber.
