The Phallus The Phallus has been associated with fertility for millenia with the oldest known being a siltstone phallus discovered in Germany, believed to be approximately 30,000 years old. In more modern times there is still a phallus festival in Japan (which was much more widespread in ancient Japan) and a local festival in the Greek village of Tyrnavos, near Larissa. In ancient Greece and Rome, the phallus was part of the festivities in the worship of Dionysus or Bacchus. Hermes, Pan and Priapus were often depicted with an erect phallus. The Norse God Freyr, the god of fertility and love, is a phallic god. The ancient Egyptians associated the phallus with the worship of Osiris. Kokopelli, of native american legend, was often depicted with a phallus. |
